Day One: E&W Goes Gluten-Free

31 days buttonI haven’t talked about it here yet, but about a month ago I had to change my diet because of a health condition and begin eating gluten-free. In some ways it has been a radical shift, and in other ways it’s not noticeable at all.

My friend Kelsey, who blogs at Heart Knit Home, encouraged me to join the 31 Days Of… blog challenge, and after some hesitation I agreed. I don’t blog here terribly often, but I always have intentions of doing more. This seemed like a good way to get in the habit of writing here more frequently while also sharing some of the exploration I’m doing into this new way of eating. I also want to give a shout out to Kelly and Angela who helped me get my lovely button and banner for this challenge.

I try very hard not to think of this foodstyle as having to live without something. That negative spin on it gives me pause. Instead I’m just trying to embrace the difference. While I don’t miss bread too much, especially since there are some good gluten-free option, I do miss being able to eat foods at restaurants that should be safe, but because of cross-contamination of cooking oil they aren’t.

The foods I’m referring to are french fries. And tortilla chips. But mostly french fries. Sigh.

Excuse me while I go saute some potato wedges in schmaltz, mmmkay?

  1. LOVE. IT!!! Great idea for the series. It will be interesting to read about your journey as you are experiencing it. The button looks GREAT!!! So crazy how the internet/Facebook works, isn’t it! XO

  2. Hi Lisa, my daughter is gluten intolerant so our family has changed our diet to gluten free. I just want to encourage you and let you know I understand it can be frustrating.

It is difficult to eat out. We have a BBQ restaurant in our area that has gluten free meats and barbeque sauce so I will often purchase that as the main course and add sides at home. Not the same as eating out but it does help if you need an easy meal. Maybe you can find something like this in your area. Concerning parties, potlucks, etc., we have learned to plan ahead if possible and bring food that is safe for our daughter. The good news is that there are more gluten free options offered everyday. We have even discovered a fully gluten free restaurant! There is a learning curve and it does take time to adjust but with a little investigating I believe you will find healthy options. Wishing you wellness. 🙂

    • Thanks, Lorri! Yes, we are learning as we go where the easiest/best places to eat are and how to manage social outings, etc. Part of my exploration in the next month will be to find the food worth leaving home for from restaurants we can trust. Thanks for your comment!

  3. Mighty Fine has dedicated french fry fryers. Some Wendy’s do. You just have to ask. It’s hard (because spontaneity can’t really happen) but Austin is an amazing place to be gluten-free.
